Stage 2 of Programming11 lessons

What programmers use every day: where files live, the terminal, an editor, Node.js to run JavaScript, Git to save versions and GitHub to share them. It ends with the game from 1.14 published on a website of your own.

  1. Lesson 2.1: Files, folders and paths

Before using the terminal you need to know where things are. A file lives in a folder, and its path is its address.

  2. Lesson 2.2: The terminal

The terminal is another way to use your computer: instead of clicking, you type commands.

  3. Lesson 2.3: A code editor: VS Code

Code is written in a code editor, which colours it, completes it and warns about errors. We'll use VS Code.

  4. Lesson 2.4: JavaScript outside the browser: Node.js

Node.js runs JavaScript on your computer, without a browser. It's also what powers many servers.

  5. Git

Committing versions, writing good messages, looking back and working on branches.

    1. 2.5.1Lesson 2.5.1: Committing versions
    2. 2.5.2Lesson 2.5.2: Messages
    3. 2.5.3Lesson 2.5.3: History and going back
    4. 2.5.4Lesson 2.5.4: Branches
  6. Lesson 2.6: GitHub: your code online

GitHub keeps a copy of your repositories online: so you don't lose them, can share them and can work with others.

  7. Lesson 2.7: Publishing a website with GitHub Pages

A website is, at the very least, an HTML file. GitHub Pages publishes it for free at an address of your own.

  8. Lesson 2.8: Project: publish your game

The game from 1.14, on a website with your name. With everything from this stage: files, terminal, editor, Git and GitHub.
